“Stonewalled,” Astra groans the next morning. “I talked to Monica last night, and she would neither confirm nor deny anything. Totally stonewalled me and talked in circles. Refused to give me a single nugget of information. She was totally sweet about it, of course. She’s one of the few people I know who can tell you to go screw yourself and make it seem kind.”

“I thought you said she was a straight shooter,” Lucas says.

“She normally is. The only time she’s ever given me the runaround has been when there’s highly sensitive information involved,” Astra replies. “And most of the time, I understand it. National security or whatever. But this? When it’s potentially one of their guys on the hook and we’re trying to save his butt? It doesn’t make sense to me.”

“Which tells us that we’re on the right track as far as Keller being an Agency man,” I point out. “She confirmed it by refusing to confirm it.”

“All right, so what do we do with that?” Astra asks. “I mean, it’s not like she gave us anything to run with.”

“It means we have nothing more than we did last night,” Lucas adds.

Though he’s coming off as a Negative Nancy at the moment, Lucas’s attitude seems to be vastly improved over yesterday. He seems far more engaged and animated, which is a plus. I’ve never thought he was a stupid man, but he’s really surprised me. Having him plugged into the situation and working with us can only benefit the investigation. And given that I didn’t have Ayad crawling up my backside and reading me the riot act last night means Lucas didn’t tell the man anything about the information Brody funneled to me. It gives me a flicker of hope that he can be trusted after all.

“Let’s rattle Monica’s cage a little harder,” I say.

“What good is that going to do?” Lucas asks.

“The harder we rattle it, the better the chance it shakes something loose,” I tell him. “If the Agency knows we’re pressing hard on this case—and have the identity of one of their NOCs—there’s a good chance we might get something out of it.”

“Didn’t Astra already do that last night?” Mo asks.

“One phone call they can ignore,” I say. “Multiple calls they can’t. Or rather, they won’t. If they know we’re actively and aggressively pursuing a case that involves one of their NOCs, I guarantee they’re going to blink first. The Agency is one of the most paranoid organizations on the face of the earth. They literally kill to protect their secrets.”

“Allegedly,” Astra corrects with a wry smile.

“Bring her up on a video conference call,” I say.

“On it,” Mo says and types away at her keyboard.

A moment later, the monitor flashes, and the “call in progress,” icon appears along with the irritating sound of the electronic “ring.” It takes a minute, but the call is answered, and we find ourselves staring at the face of Monica Hinds, the CIA’s liaison to the FBI.
